Bass
I started playing electric bass late in my teens.. seduced by the bright lights & rebellion of rock & roll as they say. Early influences came from progressive rock acts like Rush & Yes along with some straight-ahead rock like Van Halen. In college my mind was opened to the vast amount of music out there, starting with Jazz and discovering Reggae, R&B, Funk & more. After college I played with a high-calibur group of musicians named Michigan Blacksnake who really helped me develop my sense of groove, time & harmony.

The attitude of continual learning has carried on since college as calls came with further musical challenges. It started with my old friend Gilberto Rivera, who called me one day in 1999 to do a salsa gig in two days time.. I told him I didn't know the 1st thing about salsa music but he was either stuck or had faith in me. I bought a salsa bass book and shedded for 2 days straight. The music was completely different, however I made my way through the gig without messing up too badly and went on to perform in his band for about a year. I've also gotten calls from musicians from Cuba, Mali, Senegal & Kenya and have truly enjoyed the challenge that learning a whole new dialect of music can bring. Lately I've added singing harmonies to my repertoir with Los Sugar Kings. It's been a challenge to sing and play at the same time "especially in Spanglish" but the work is really starting to pay off and the band is really starting to do well in the area.

Check out the Inspirations page to see what bass players I've admired & studied and also the Music page to hear some audio samples and thanks for listenting..
